Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
The Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) was established in 2007 by the Human Rights Council, the principal human rights organ of the United Nations pursuant to resolution 6/36, as a subsidiary organ of the Council. Its mandate was amended in September 2016 by resolution 33/25 of the Human Rights Council.
It is composed of five experts selected in accordance with the procedure established by the Human Rights Council in resolutions 5/1 and 33/25.
It carries out studies in order to promote the promotion and protection of the rights of indigenous peoples through the following activities:
– clarify the implications of fundamental principles such as self-determination and free, prior and informed consent;
– to examine best practices and challenges in various fields related to the rights of indigenous peoples; to suggest measures that States and other actors could adopt in the field of laws, policies and programmes.
The Expert Mechanism submits annual thematic reports to the Human Rights Council documenting findings on specific topics and providing guidance and recommendations to UN member States, civil society organizations and other stakeholders.
