United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues
The Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues is an advisory body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) whose mandate is to discuss indigenous issues related to economic and social development, the environment, culture, education, health and human rights.
It is composed of 16 independent experts, who serve as members in their personal capacity for a period of three years and can be re-elected or reappointed for an additional period. Eight of the members are nominated by the Governments and the remaining eight directly by the indigenous organizations of their regions of origin.
The members nominated by the indigenous organizations are appointed by the President of ECOSOC and represent the seven socio-cultural regions identified with a view to broadly representing the indigenous peoples of the world.
The regions are: Africa; Asia; Central and South America and the Caribbean; the Arctic; Central and Eastern Europe, the Russian Federation, Central Asia and Transcaucasia; North America; and, the Pacific. It should be noted that there is an additional square that rotates between the first three regions of this list.
In accordance with its mandate, the Permanent Forum should:
* provide expert advice and recommendations on indigenous issues to the Council, as well as to United Nations programmes, funds and agencies, through the Council;
* to create awareness and promote the integration and coordination of activities related to indigenous issues within the United Nations system; and,
* to prepare and disseminate information on indigenous issues.
The first session was held in May 2002, and since then it has been held once a year in New York.
