Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues
Nineteenth session – New York, 13–24 April 2020
Indigenous peoples’ right to autonomy is firmly entrenched in articles 3 and 4 of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues has often focused on issues of self-government and the rights of indigenous peoples. The present study focuses specifically on the experiences of indigenous peoples, the backgrounds to the various indigenous autonomies, the options available to indigenous peoples and the obstacles that indigenous peoples face when trying to exercise their rights according to international law.
